A few wraps of thread seal tape make your threaded connections easier to tighten and help them seal cleanly.

How it actually works

On tapered NPT threads — like where your shower arm threads into the wall, your shower holder, or your shower head — the threads themselves create the seal as they wedge tighter together. The tape isn't what seals; it lubricates the threads so they can draw deeper and seat fully, and fills any tiny imperfections along the way. (NPT is a neat bit of engineering — the taper is what does the sealing.)

Where you don't need it

Straight NPS threads — like your hose connections — don't seal on the threads at all. They seal on a seated rubber washer at the face of the fitting. Tape there won't hurt anything, but it isn't needed — so save it for your tapered connections.

How to apply it

1. Start clean: Make sure the threads are clean and dry.
2. Wrap in the right direction: Wrap the tape clockwise around the male threads (the direction the fitting tightens) so it doesn't unravel as you screw it on.
3. Use the right amount: Five to six wraps is plenty. Pull it snug so it conforms to the threads.
4. Snug it up: Thread it together by hand, then give it a firm final turn with a wrench over a cloth. Don't be timid — that last bit of tightening is often what stops a leak, and you won't damage anything.

Still getting a small bead of a leak?

It's usually one of a few simple things:

• Give it that last turn. Most small leaks are just an under-tightened connection. People stop short because they're worried about breaking something — you won't. Go ahead and snug it that extra bit.
• Re-tape and re-thread. If you're still unsure, back the fitting off, make sure you've applied enough tape to lubricate the threads, and thread it back on.
• Check what you're connecting to. If the existing pipe or fitting on your wall is old, corroded, or dirty, it can prevent a clean seal. Clean the threads up, or replace the worn part.
